Looking Back and Moving Forward

Since Taryn left at the beginning of August, the most common question about APAC I’ve been asked is “how is it going without Taryn?” The answer is complex, of course there is a huge impact to the company when 1/3rd of its senior staff leaves, and this is a major transition time for all of us, but in the challenges it is so apparent that APAC isn’t the sum of its staff, it’s so much more.

Opening Doors, 2001

This week is an important one in APAC history and for the APAC community. On September 18th, 2001 APAC had its first performance – Opening Doors. It wasn’t the easiest of openings – in reality the show was set to open one week prior – September 11th, 2001. With the events of the day, it was necessary to cancel opening night, but the decision was made, rather than cancelling the show altogether, that the show would be postponed for one week, the hope was this theater company wouldn’t end before it began.

The company then had to face the unknown, whether anyone would show up, whether it was too soon, or if the word would spread given that all the news outlets were saturated with current events. But those doubts were put to rest when Opening Doors opened its doors to a packed house – the Astoria community came out in force, showing they needed this company and the sense of community as much as APAC needed them.

Between then and now, time and again this company has faced challenges. We’ve had staff changes, moved venues multiple times, and just in the past year had to cancel performances because of Hurricane Sandy and a winter blizzard. With each challenge we felt the support of the APAC family. This community, this family is made up of amazing artists, loyal audiences, generous supporters who come together time and again to a creates something bigger than all of us.

So although we are facing the challenge of being down one staff member during the first part of our season, the APAC family is stronger than ever before. Our first mainstage this season, The Cottage will bring back some APAC veterans as well as a few new faces who are already adding an amazing energy to the process. So come November 7th when The Cottage opens, we look forward to our family coming together and helping us open the 13th season of mainstage productions.
