About the show:
Not every fairy tale has sunshine. This world-premiere play follows Dima, a 16-year old girl with a rare skin condition. Cloistered away in her bedroom, her parents worry that she ll never have the normal American teenage experience they sought for her when they came to New York from Afghanistan. Little do they know that Dima s getting by with some help from her secret friends Elliot, a poet who hangs out under her window hawking rhymes, and Speedo, a talking nurse shark who saves the day in more ways than one. But will Dima get her happy ending? Rapunzel never had it this bad or this good.

Seeking:
DIMA:
Female, 16, Afghan-American. An innocent, sheltered, and wildly imaginative girl who is allergic to the sun and has never been outside her home. A dreamer who paralyzed by the physical reality of her illness. Note: open to actors of any age who can conceivably play the character, who is 16. 

ELLIOT:
Male,18, American, Any ethnicity. A street-wise poet boy. Prince Charming meets The Artful Dodger. A trust fund kid playing artist. Note: open to actors of any age who can conceivably play the character, who is 18. 

RHAMI:
Female, late 30s, Afghani. A dutiful and observant mother and wife. The emotional anchor of the family. She craves routine and stability. A woman of deep faith, though not specifically religious.

AMIR:
Male, mid to late 40s, Afghani. A writer and academic. Devoted father and husband. Warm, yet fearful and gentle. Westernized, with an ardent belief in the American Dream. 

EMCEE/UPS MAN/SPEEDO:
One actor to play 3 roles. Male, late 20s-30s, any ethnicity. [EMCEE] The Narrator is our guide for the fairy-tale. He is linked to the ocean and is a bit of a magical mischief-maker. An omniscient presence on the stage. Also plays [SPEEDO] a Nurse Shark is Dima’s best friend. The spirit animal fairy-godmother who is adventurous, encouraging, and playful. He is a puppet operated and voiced by The Narrator. Also plays [UPS MAN], an average Joe doing his job.
