What happens when fate upsets the plans of a married couple from the generation who was taught that they can “have it all?” What happens when fear and prejudice take hold of a generation taught they were above those weaknesses? When it comes to raising our children, do parents not change with the times?

The Patient River was originally conceived after Kevin saw the Lincoln Center production of The Light In the Piazza. Just as the ingénue in that musical, Kevin grew up with a slight disability and almost smothered by a mother who had no idea how to cope with such a child. It was Kevin’s realization that his mother’s actions were less a result of weakness, as they were a product of her time—and it was that idea that gave birth to this play. The Patient River has received one round-table reading as part of Emerging Artist Theatre’s Playwright Circle.

This program is supported in part by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and the Dramatist Guild Fund.
