Three Weeks Down

Erin Moore, APAC’s New Executive Director started her position at APAC just over three weeks ago. She began it during one of the busiest times of our season and had to hit the ground running. She wanted to share some of her perspective from the first three weeks on the job.

Tonight is our second preview of Allegro, and today is the end of my third week at APAC as the new Executive Director. What a busy three weeks it has been!

Soon after arriving for the first time at our office in Kaufman Astoria Studios, learning where everything was and figuring out all the important things like how the filing system works, where to pick up the mail, and the closest Starbucks, it was time to get to work. Lucky for me, the work at APAC is the best part, because it means connecting with our audiences and our artists.

APAC is nothing without its audience- you are all the reason we’re here, and the community of our audience is one of the best things about APAC. So, one of my favorite things of these first few weeks was getting together with Annie and our intern, Jamie, and choosing the winners of our Annual Raffle, live tweeting the results, and sending out emails to the lucky prize winners.

Meeting with our Board, getting in touch with our supporters in the community to introduce myself and set up meetings was next on the agenda. APAC’s Board is an incredible group of people; they are so invested and passionate about our theatre, and care deeply about Astoria’s cultural organizations. We are setting out an ambitious plan for APAC’s future, and I am thrilled to work with them as APAC moves forward.

And of course as all of this was happening was perhaps the most exciting part of my time here so far- Allegro rehearsals and the countdown to opening night. From the first rehearsal in our performance space to last night’s first preview, the show has grown and developed so wonderfully. Tech week is a hectic time, with many changes, lots of late nights, but with an undercurrent of excitement. It’s challenging even when it isn’t your first week or two on the job! It is such a privilege to watch our actors, musicians, director and choreographer, and our designers work. I mentioned that one of the best things about APAC is its community, and tech week is when you really see our community of artists as a whole come together. It is an energizing, collaborative environment.

And that brings us back to tonight. Our second preview. One more night until opening. I’ll be there, and I hope I’ll see you there as well! I can’t imagine a better way to start a new job- right in the thick of it as our show opens, with a chance to meet all of you.

See you at the theatre!
