28):
APAC Loses Lease, Gets New
Executive Director
by linda j. wilson
In spite of the fact that
the Astoria Performing Arts Center (APAC) has lost its
lease at the Astoria Presbyterian Church, the
four-year-old theater group is looking forward to a new
season of big doings with the guidance of a new
executive director. Taryn Drongowski, a three-year
resident of Astoria, took over the executive director
position recently. Founder Susan Scannell will serve as
president of the board of directors and Brian Swasey
continues as APAC artistic director…

This Season, "APAC Delivers!"
This year, the Astoria Performing Arts Center no
longer has a lease on the theater we began in (in 2001). APAC has
taken this opportunity to further deepen our community ties, to
think "outside of the box," and to seek out less traditional spaces
for producing shows.
While we search for a new space in Astoria/LIC,
we're bringing theater to different venues throughout the
neighborhood. This winter and spring, we will be producing:
-
"The Game Plan" An original show for children to be
produced in Astoria's Adventure Land Day Care, and in local parks.
-
"Vocal Ease" Professional entertainers will
bring exciting shows to senior centers in Astoria.
-
"Push Factor" Performances by the
innovative dance company.
-
"Senior Stars!" A showcase on Astoria's senior
residents, similar to our successful "Summer Stars!" youth
program, but with an added focus on professional development for
the performers.
-
"Caruso" A one man, historical, theatrical work
celebrating the life of one of the fathers of modern recording
artists -- Enrico Caruso.
-
Our Signature. A musical, from award-winning
director, Brian Swasey
-
"Summer Stars 2006" Our popular summer,
youth, musical theatre training program will return for its
fourth(!) year.
Details, including dates, locations and
directions, will be posted to this site. To be included on our
mailing list, please see the link at left. We look forward to seeing
you there!
A New Home
With funding from the New York Department of
Cultural Affairs (for which we have APAC supporter Peter Vallone Jr
to thank!), we will be seeking a permanent home in Astoria/LIC.
From its beginning, the Astoria Performing Arts Center has been blessed with support from, literally, thousands—volunteers, actors, technicians, government officials, Astoria business owners, the press, teachers, and many, many others. We strive to earn and repay that support by producing shows of the highest quality and by seeking out opportunities to give back to the community.
We depend on your support. If you would like to make a tax deductible contribution to the Astoria Performing Arts Center, to help it realize its potential to be a permanent arts institution in Queens, please go to the “Help APAC Grow” link on the left side of this screen or write to
