Perhaps of greater importance than type, is the actor’s ability to understand and execute the style of the play. Billy Witch moves quickly from bawdy irreverent comedy to campy, horror, to nostalgic, earnest, honesty. The material demands smart, funny, generous actors capable of embracing the many tones of the play and supporting their fellow actors.
SEEKING:
OLIVER: Male. Young, earnest, naïve, kind. His desire to fit in, be liked, and please everyone is his Achilles heel – proving to be his downfall over and over again. He is charming, deferential, and sweet. The “straight-man” of the show, landing everyone else’s jokes as well as his own. He is the only character who recognizes how crazy the world of the play is. The actor must be sincerely likable as the audience sees the play through his eyes – and a great comedian. an “every kid” on the scrawny side. Young for his age. Perhaps a little cute.
MIRANDA: Female. Like Oliver, Miranda is earnest, sweet and very much wants to fit in
with the cool kids. She is more self-aware than Oliver, a bit wise beyond her years and yet very young. Under her tween-ish desire to fit in, she has a pretty good sense of who she is and who she isn’t. girl next door. Perhaps a little cute.
SANDY: Female. On the surface she’s the bad-girl of the camp – or at least this is how she wants to be thought of. She acts the part of the flirty experienced girl, dressing and appearing as though much older than the other girls and uses this persona to elevate her social status at camp. In reality she is totally sexually inexperienced and insecure. It’s all an act. Think Mena Suvari’s character in American Beauty. old for her age. Sexy (for a tween)
P. D. LOCKWOOD: Male. A camp director out of a B-horror movie. On the surface he is the
perfect camp patriarch. He loves tradition and playing the roll of surrogate father to the kids. Behind closed doors, his desire for control and order has taken on a monstrous form as he keeps his wife Melody locked in a trunk at all times – ever fearful that he will be cuckolded. He is also responsible for having killed Billy years ago, after the boy got too close to Melody. This actor should be capable of playing both the humor and darkness of this roll. The character is larger than life, bold, loud, terrifying – and of course funny. a bit of a creepy old man.
MELODY: Female. Lockwood’s wife. Though at one point she was likely a radiant woman
full of life, she is now a walking ghost of her former self. This performance requires an actor capable and daring enough to create a boldly physical performance. Melody has been locked in a trunk for years and this has taken a horrible toll on her voice and body. She should inspire both fear and empathy. Though this role is small, it is pivotal to the arch of the script and her entrance must be a showstopper. a wisp of a woman. Thin and twisted.
BILLY: Male. The title character of the play, Billy is the ghost of a sweet young boy, somewhat like Oliver, who was murdered at the camp years ago after getting too close to Melody. In life he was an extremely awkward child, an outsider who was disliked and bullied by the other kids. In death he is both this same sweet awkward wimp and a ghost
bent on achieving revenge against the man who murdered him. He is also capable of great manipulation as he uses Oliver’s desire to be liked to aid in his revenge plot. He is probably very small, and pale, still very much a boy.
CAMP COUNSELORS: 1 Male & 1 Female. Both have a deep earnest love of camp. Probably cheer leaders/spirit team participants in high school. They love their job and enjoy
indulging in childish behavior themselves when no one is looking (making out in the woods). Both must be able to sing and at least one needs to be able to play the guitar. Both probably somewhat athletic looking
CHORUS: 2 Male & 2 Female. To play 20’s. Primarily featured in the telling of the ghost story. Great comedic timing a must. Also must be game to take part in transitions and group scenes. Singing ability a BIG plus.
