Staff Profile: Dave Charest, Marketing Director
APAC's Marketing Director Dave Charest
How did you arrive at APAC? What path brought you here?
Tom Wojtunik (APAC’s Artistic Director) and I are good friends from Marymount Manhattan College. When I was starting my marketing consulting business I asked Tom to lunch so I could bend his ear about some ideas I had specifically about marketing indie theater.
In 2009, Tom put me in touch with Taryn Sacramone (APAC’s Executive Director) when they were looking shake up APAC’s usually family friendly programming with Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman. There was worry that the choice might alienate some of APAC’s existing audience. I suggested Taryn address that fear head on and let people know why they were making the choice. The feedback from the APAC regulars was extremely positive and they were happy to see APAC making an adventurous choice. I’ve been on as Marketing Director since.
What are you known for professionally? What do you have a knack for?
I have a knack for communicating things simply. And getting people excited about a project.
What’s the one problem you are best at solving for APAC?
I’m best at getting the word out about APAC with limited resources. I do so by treating the APAC audience and the artists we work with as collaborators. My job is to give everyone the tools they need to spread the word.
What are you most passionate about professionally? What most excites you about your work & the contribution you can make?
I have a great deal of respect for the APAC staff and the artists we work with. As a marketer it’s exciting when you’re confident about the quality of the work and the people behind it. It excites me most when everyone’s hard work is paid off by a room full of people to see it. I’m equally excited seeing the smiles from the audience as the leave the theater.
What are you passionate about personally? What do you really enjoy? What can’t you stop talking about?
I’m blessed with a wonderful wife and adorable twin girls. I love hugging, kissing and laughing with each of them.
Where can we find you when you’re not working? What’s your favorite way to spend a weekend or a Sunday afternoon?
My favorite way to spend a Sunday afternoon is surrounded by good friends, making food, laughing and enjoying life.
Where did you grow up and why aren’t you there now?
Funnily enough I just moved back to near where I grew up in Massachusetts. I was offered an opportunity that meant great things for my family. Although I’m sad to not be around APAC physically, I’m over the moon that I can still be involved as Marketing Director.
How do you want to be remembered?
I’ve been lucky enough in my life to be surrounded by people who inspire and challenge me to do better. I hope to be remembered as someone who did the same for others.
